Creation of Sound for the Sequence

Having filmed all of our shots for the title sequence the focus then moved onto what music had been created.

From listening to the various pre existing soundtracks I had a good understanding of what was conventional in a horror movie sequence however had formed my own ideas to make ours unique.

  • Using Garageband I used several different instruments before I settled on the 'Steinway Grand Piano'.

  • I created a musical idea that fitted with the opening section of film where we see a time lapse of the house and a tilting upwards shot of a statue with  the notes C E G and C up the octave. For the second ascending sequence of notes I substitute the C up the octave for a B a semitone lower
  • The notes in this section were all played with the sustain pedal on so the sound carried to each new note
  • After this organised run of notes I then used multiple chords and other runs of notes to create a disorganised atmosphere to the music which I had heard multiple times in other opening credit sequences
  • At the end of the track I again used the repeated ascending run of notes to give a sense of finality to the sequence.
  • Having created the main theme for the sequence I decided it needed bulking out and for there to be some interest at different points of the sequence when certain things came up on the screen
  • Using the 'orchestral kit' I held the sustain again and created a slowly developing percussion sound which faded when we see a silhouette of a girl by a window.
  • This gave the sense of build up to that moment

  • There are multiple times during the sequence of film shots where we see a doll of some kind
  • Using the idea of this I decided to use an interpretation of 'Rock a bye Baby' using the glockenspiel sound, however flattening the A and taking it off rhythm so that it appeared distorted to give the idea of the dolls having something sinister behind them
