Opening Credit Locations

Deconstruction of Location in Possession Horror Opening Credits

Amityville II: The Possession, was released in 1982
  • The titles are shown against the backdrop of a large house or mansion.
  • The camera pans around the building
  • It then slowly comes to a close up shot of an upstairs window showing that this maybe of some significant importance to the film.
  • The house is set within a wooded area
  • This suggests that the house is separate from others and that any occupants may be distanced from others in the area.
  • The woods around it give the impression that it is an abandoned house as it appears unkempt.
  • Both the house and the woods are common conventions of the possession horror genre so are effective.

Constantine was released in 2005
  • Unlike Amityville II: The Possession, Constantine's titles are set in different locations and use scenes from where the different characters appear, correlating to when their title comes up.
  • By using many locations the viewer gets a more detailed idea of what the film will involve and what happens during it, unlike The Possession where it is left much more to the viewers imagination.
  • Despite more locations being used they are blurred so are not obvious to the viewer, the characters are much more the focus of attention
  • Locations used in Constantine's credits appear to include a hospital, living room, urban street and a railway line.
  • By using many locations the film experiments with different conventions of the genre - some appear more common than others for possession, such as the hospital which is commonly seen in films such as 'Possession', and less commonly seen locations such as urban outdoor settings.
By researching locations I can evaluate that the credits are usually filmed in areas that feature in the film, either in a continuity edit of one location or in a montage of different locations which are not necessarily linked.
