Deconstruction of Music in Insidious

Media Coursework - Deconstruction of the Music

Insidious was released in 2010

  • In this clip it starts with a low pitched howling noise which is layered over several times by low undertones in a sweeping effect. This gives the impression of something hiding under the surface of the scene
  • The sound is continuous and does not change in pitch or dynamics until the woman brings out the photos, when this happens the music fades out gradually and enters a new section of sound.
  • The effect of this section of music is creating a ghostly atmosphere against the diegetic dialogue. This is further rooted in the clip by the use of low lighting.

  • When the photos are handed to Josh at 0:57, the dynamics of the howling increases and now a high pitched noise has been added which is a descending scale.
  • This gives the idea of the secrets unravelling.

  • The scale reaches a medium pitch and crescendos quickly then fades when the first photo is taken from the box.
  • The sudden dynamic change suggests the anxiety felt by the characters

  • There is a sound similar to a warning alarm that sounds when a new photo is taken from the box - giving the impression of the danger that the characters are in
  • This alarm sound crescendos in stages as each photo the woman gets closer to the boy
  • Finally on the last photo the sound is created by violins and scream like and high pitched. It falls back down the scale and fades out
  • This scream is noticeably different to the previous ones as the sound is recognizably human sounding and has lasts for longer. This together with the image at the time creates a jump scare.

  • After the photos are put away and diegetic dialogue continues amongst the characters, there is a constant drum beat now as well as the fore mentioned low pitched howling noise. This gives the idea of anxiety within the characters now a new idea has been introduced
