The Sewing Machine Scene
I analysed the camera shots and editing in this scene from 'Annabelle'
- The scene opens with a medium shot of Mia sitting using a sewing machine.
- The camera then cuts to an extreme close up of Mia's hand pushing the material under the needle.
- There is a repetitive machinery sound accompanied by a low horn sound increasing in pitch which adds to the audiences uncomfortableness as it builds tension to something bad happening
- The camera the jump cuts to the kitchen were the camera pans to a medium shot of a frying pan where the foil starts to inflate
- The camera then continuously jump cuts between extreme close up shots of Mia's hand with the needle moving faster as the camera zooms in and the foil in the fringe pan getting bigger.
- The shots get faster as the trouble becomes more imminent
- Close Up shots of Annabelle's face are then added in to the fast cuts to show that she is the cause of the chaos
- The repetitive shots then build to a point then there is a fast medium shot of the foil exploding and the needle piercing Mia's finger, the fast cut showing that they both happen at the same time
- The shots then increase in length as Mia goes to wash her finger as the tension is thought to be over
- Mia then enters the kitchen which is on fire and falls onto her stomach, there is then a low angle wide shot of her crawling away from the fire then being dragged back by an invisible demon. This conforms to common conventions in possession horror as the possessed doll is controlling the situation
The fast cuts between shots which progressively decrease in length are successful as they build tension and the audience know something bad is going to happen in each scenario. The simultaneous action in each shot also works as it means the build up resulted in a problem for the character.
