- For my first music practice I decided to focus mainly violin and guitar
- I created it using GarageBand's audio recorder and sampler
- Using the audio recorder I recorded me playing violin and using a glissando on all four strings to create an eery feel.
- I got the inspiration for this from watching different possession horror scenes
- I also recorded playing below the bridge on an open E string
- Using the sampler I recorded a reoccurring low E open string
- I then played this on E and sustain through sampler
- This gave the low hitting noise or heavy breathing effect
- I let three people listen to this track individually and received constructive criticism, including:
- 'play a couple of notes on the violin to give a creepy effect and repeat it or increase dynamics'
- 'I like the violin but not the other'
- 'Maybe incorporate something from the setting when you film'
- Having received opinions from my first sound clip I decided to try using different instruments, still using GarageBand but only the audio recorder
- On this recording I used three instruments.
- The main instrument is the piano, this was created using the sustain pedal and a selection of repeated notes. On GarageBand this recording is in the 'large room' setting, exploiting the echo which evokes an eery idea to it
- I also used an alto saxophone, playing the upper octave D which was sustained and then dropping a semitone to a D flat. Like with the piano, it is recorded under the 'large room' setting, both to increase the echo and to make it seem as fluid as possible
- The final instrument used was the violin, playing a continuous bottom G through out and a B two tones up again through out
- The notes combined create a rounded tone to the music however the saxophone's drop down the semitone creates the idea of mystery
- On all opinions received, this version received the most praise
- 'it would add tension to the film'
- 'I think it's a lot different'
GarageBand
- Using GarageBand made putting the music together a lot easier
- The recordings were easier to record and add the correct effects to
- By being on my phone I could freely take it to where I wanted to record
Evaluation
To evaluate on my practical I believe that the use of piano and strings is the best combination with sustained notes and slow rhythm as these are the aspects from which I received most positive responses.
