Deconstruction of Typography

Saw
  • Blue signifies depression, suggesting the the film brings pain and misery to both character and audience.
  • Transitional serif font gives an antique effect which implies that the film is set in the past, adding to the setting of the film. It can also suggest an element of mystery because the effect of history/past creates an enigma as it makes the audience question what has happened before.
 Saw 2

  • Faded/patchy green with hints of a brighter yellow (a mix with yellow) gives the impression of discord, jealousy and cowardice, giving the impression that this is what the film will entail. This gives an idea that because of these conventions it represents horror, implying the genre.
  • Serif style font is setting a trend from the first title of 'Saw' and may also be highlighting that this film may also have an element of history which creates a sense of mystery as a sub-genre. It's because of this that these common conventions relate to the horror/possession genre as context prior to the film's narrative creates enigma.

 Saw 3

  • Silver is the colour of equality, femininity and wealth. It can be argued that the titles has deliberately been made this colour to correspond to film's narrative, suggesting that silver is a reflection of the film's evil. This represents the genre as horror by giving it a false sense of innocence.
  • The silver colour on the black background makes it stand out and becomes more prominent to the audience as a marketing technique. The traditional 'Saw' serif font has been used again to signify an ageing narrative and the font size has also increased each time to become bigger. This could arguably suggest that its creating tension as something big is coming.

Saw 4

  • In 'Saw V' we no longer see the black background compared to the other three, instead we see a rusty old background with marks of blood running down it. This maintains the old feel to the film's genre suggesting horror because of the iconography of blood (gore) and an old wall.
  • The Serif font has also been used to emphasize the film's narrative of origin dating back into late history. The effect of roman numerals also gives this impression adding to the conventions of horror.

 Saw 5
  • 'Saw VI' also differs to the first three because the background is not fully black but has a bigger font of the title 'Saw'. The colour of the title being white also contradicts the connotation of white as the colour signifies purity and goodness, suggesting that the film will act against these colour. From this it can be inferred that the genre of the film is a horror because of the false meaning of the title's colour.
