Codes and Conventions of Horror

Location
  • Horror locations are often everyday locations such as family homes in order to make the situation more 'real' for the viewer as they are in locations they can relate to.
                         Insidious (2010)                                                 The Conjuring (2013)
  • Dark, abandoned or isolated areas where people are somewhere they shouldn't be or there is no escape. For example The Woman in Black is a supernatural horror set in a very isolated hose on an island, the island becomes inaccessible when the tide rises which means dwellers cannot escape at night. This builds fear as the character becomes trapped which also builds tension.
  • Grave Encounters is set in an abandoned psychiatric hospital. It is filmed like a documentary which makes it seem realistic and convinces the audience all that happened were real events.
The Woman in Black (2012)                                                 Grave Encounters (2011)Mise-En-Scene
  • very low key lighting to create obscurity and build up to to tense moments or jump scares. Low lighting or back lighting also creates shadows and silhouettes to crate fear of the unknown which will make the audience feel uncomfortable.
  • children's toys- children's toys are commonly used to represent innocent objects being possessed and bought to life. The sound of a music box is a common sound heard in horror as the nursery rhymes are disturbing and we match the images of possessed objects with a popular children's song.
  • Masks are commonly used to hide a villains identity in horror. They create enigma as we do not know who is behind the mask. Popular horror masked characters include:
Characters
  • Villain - often have a disfigured face or wear a mask
  • Victim - groups are usually young, being where they shouldn't be
  • Victim -Individual victim will often be a young female as they're seen as weak and vulnerable
