Insidious Genre Deconstruction

Insidious 2 was released in 2013
  • In the first section of this clip we see a young child with their back towards us, conveying a sense of mystery as to their character, commonly seen in the horror genre
  • The room is pretty in a pink and white pattern, subverting the common depictions of horror movies being in a dark setting

  •  We then see the ghost figure, commonly seen in the supernatural horror genre
  • The camera angle is low which depicts the ghost as superior to the child she is talking to
  • Unlike other supernatural horror movies such as 'The Possession' the ghost figure is seen as being careful of her appearance and appears as any other human, the only difference is that her make up suggests her presence on the other side, subverting common representations of the horror genre

  • Conforming to the horror genre, the ghost figure is aggressive towards the child. This is shown through the use of close up two shots and an establishing shot

  • On seeing the two other people in the room the ghost figure screams in a diegetic tone and the lighting dims rapidly and rapidly moves to a close up of her face. These elements are commonly seen in the horror genre.
  • This is a complete contrast to the prior seen brightly lit room which suggested normality and therefore makes the viewer feel uncomfortable and surprised through the quick editing, commonly seen in the horror genre
