Deconstructuon: Production Companies

  • From the 'Annabelle' trailer it shows the production companies shortly at the beginning which include 'Warner Bros' and 'New Line Cinema'. The titles are shown in a second long slide each to up beat music, suggesting that the music is foreshadowing of the films plot which is a typical convention of a possession horror, hence why it is called a teaser trailer. Both companies get the same viewing time on the trailer, but 'Warner Bros' goes first suggesting that they have priority over first viewing as they played a more important role in the production of the film.
  • At the end of the trailer we see additional credits which says "New Line Cinema presents..." suggesting that the role of the second company plays a vital role, like 'Warner Bros'.
  • A list of Production Companies that would be catered to producing our possession horror would be Warner Bros as they managed 'The Conjuring' and the prequel, 'Annabelle'. New Line Cinema as it has done both them films, as well as 'Friday the 13th'
  • Using some of the world's most prestigious production companies offers many advantages, such as large investments to the production which leads to good facilities and equipment for the production, like paying for locations and filming equipment. However the disadvantages would be that films who use prestigious production companies are under pressure to make a turnover and make a film of high quality as the audience will have high expectations for what it cost.
  • The fact that the film has used two of the largest production companies in the horror/possession industry. This immediately identifies the genre of the film as possession horror due to the production companies reputations.
Universal on the other hand is not known for horror films as they have not produced any modern horror films because they do not specialise in horror as they announced they would not produce horrors in November 2014. This doesn't make it an effective production company for our opening title.
