Deconstruction of Sound in Grave Encounters Credits
Deconstruction of Sound in Grave Encounters Opening Credits
The credits start with an interview like scene that uses diegetic dialogue. During this it is explained to us the context of the film and the audience is given an idea of what is going to happen during the film.
There is no non-diegetic music in this scene which focuses the attention on to the dialogue, emphasising its importance in the film.
After the interview finishes it a new section which starts with a heavy drum beat and carries on with a tinny drum dotted rhythm sounding beat. Because of this it makes the audience feel on edge as it is not a regular rhythm.
Over this noise we then hear narration from 'Lance Preston' explaining how they came to make the documentary.
At 01:09 a high pitched whining noise is added to the texture.
A drum note is held for approximately seven seconds after a photo of a star comes up on off colour paper emphasising it, giving the idea of something not being totally right within the film.
This drum note is left to fade out and another high pitched noise is layered on top suggesting the increasing of panic and feeling of supernatural beings.
A clip of a man with a camera leads to a camera shot noise which jump cuts to another film clip with a ghostly shape.
After this clip the texture becomes thinner again suggesting that the tension has been decreased - this subverts normal expectations as the viewer can visually see that something is not 'normal' in the scene.
This lull in the texture last only a few seconds.
The texture then rapidly increases again and the drum beat is in 4/4 time with the first three notes sounding and a rest on beat four. This rhythm gives a higher sense of assurance to the viewer and is coupled by clips showing the investigators.
Throughout there is an underlying whispering noise that has hints of metallic effects to it.
Directly before the title is introduced the drum beat accelerates and the high pitch noise crescendos, increasing the tension dramatically.
These noises are left to fade out and 'Grave Encounters' is announced over the top via narrative.
