- In the opening scene of the haunting in connecticut, old photos of family portraits and family funerals are shown, after the images are shown it says, 'based on a true story', which is commonly use in supernatural horror films to create fear amongst the audience.- In-between shots there are shots of blood running which indicates that there will be danger and murder through the film.
- The scene is dark and mysterious which is a common convention of supernatural horror films.

- Throughout the first few shots soft piano playing is in the background and it starts to go out of tune and becomes more eerie which conveys that there will be danger in the foreseeable future and builds up tension.
- Low key lighting is used to emphasise the idea of darkness and this is a common fear amongst people which is why it is incorporated into supernatural horror films.- There are fast cuts and flashes of light in-between these cuts which creates suspense and makes the film more engaging for the viewers.
- Jump cuts are used here as a way to frighten the audience into believing that paranormal events are happening which makes the scene more effective.
- After the first few shots the next scene shows the mother of the family being interviewed, this makes the film seem more realistic as it makes the past events to be a true story.
- There is non-diegetic dialogue of 'why do bad things happen to bad people?' and bad things usually does happen to good people in supernatural films as it is unexpected and creates fear in the audience as they start to feel more vulnerable in the fear that it will happen to them, so this conforms to the stereotypical supernatural horror film.
- Whilst the mother is being interviewed, hand held camera shots and over the shoulder shots are used making the audience feel like they're not watching it but are there in the scene and it also makes the film seem more realistic.
- In addition there is a quick shot of a pile of newspapers with the one on top titled,' The real hell house', this tells us that the supernatural events would have occurred in a house and this is a common location for supernatural films as it creates fear in the audience as they might think it is going to happen to them.
- The shot of the isolated location is in the middle of nowhere in America which is derilict and remote, this is a common representation of supernatural films as this location makes them appear more vulnerable as there is no escape.
- The film is based on a story about a regular family and involves children which when the supernatural events start to happen the parents are made vulnerable which subverts to the the common representation of adults as they are usually seen at dominant and unafraid.
