Creating Fonts for Opening Titles

I used PhotoShop to experiment and create fonts for the opening titles of our possession horror film

Font 1
To create this font I used the text tool to type 'EDITED BY'. I then used the smudge tool and a 1pt solid brush to randomly draw lines across the text and did the same with a 1pt black paint brush.
What Went Well?
  • The overall barbed effect was effective as it fits with the horror genre
  • Dark background fits genre and matches dark theme of our opening title sequence
How could I Improve?
  • The colours aren't very effective
  • The original font I used was quite modern and not suitable for genre
  • I could instead uses a serif font

 Font 2
For this font, I used black text on a white background which was the opposite to my first attempt, I also used a serif font to make sure it is more appropriate for genre and I think this font generally looks more convincing
What Went Well?

  • The serif font is convincing as it looks older than sans serif

How could I Improve?
  • I only used the smudge tool rather than smudge and erase which makes the text look 'furry' which isn't the desired effect.

Font 3
I opened the font I had made above and used the draw tool with a 1pt white brush and erased random lines from the text. This looks similar to font 1 but I have made several improvements
What Went Well?

  • The scratched out effect fits in with horror well and small smudges look sharp and appropriate for horror genre

How could I Improve?
  • Add colour
  • Move letters around (too straight / organised)

Font 4
What Went Well?

  • The red fits the genre

How could I Improve?
  • Move the letters
  • Use different tools on PhotoShop rather than just smudge and eraser.
  • The red is too bright
Font 5
What Went Well?

  • Faded letters
  • Unorganized letters
  • Darker patches

How could I Improve?
  • Better colours that stands out (or change background)
  • Use a serif font

Font 6
What Went Well?

  • Serif font
  • Religious symbolism
  • 'Worn' effect on the cross

How could I Improve?

  • I like this font however to experiment with colour and maybe alter the grey letters slightly to see what looks best
Animated Font

(Font 4) I used the smudge tool to smudge the text so it was unreadable then saved each image into a folder. I then used a Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) creator to make a GIF of the images. I used a fast speed (100 millisecond delay) to make it look like there is interference in the text. I like this text as it adds movement and fits the genre well. The images I used are below:

I made the first smudged image three times in the GIF so it stayed on screen for longer
